WWII Exhibit Interactives
Role - Sr. UX Designer
Visual Design, UI/UX, Game strategy & Design, Illustration
Overview
I designed and illustrated all the UI/UX and visuals for three digital interactives for the WWII Exhibit at the Oregon Historical Society.
Key Deliverables:
-
An “Oregon Stories” archive where visitors could view historic videos focused on Oregon’s role in the war.
-
A digital scrapbook to browse through images and biographies of Oregon soldiers.
-
Two standing kiosks displayed our “Crack The Code” game, which gave visitors a basic understanding of cryptography based on the centerpiece artifact, an authentic Enigma code-breaking machine.
Process
Discovery and Research:
After lengthy discussions with key stakeholders to define the intent, user base, hardware, and content I dove head-first into the history of the Enigma machine as well as simple code-breaking games.
Game Design & Content Strategy:
Multiple workshopping sessions brought us to a simple "hangman-like" game enhanced by Enigma-inspired visuals and motion design. I also worked with the museum to procure digitized historical photos and documents to be organized, edited, and added to the standing kiosks.
Visual/Audio Design & Illustration:
Collaborating closely with our developers, I sketched and hand-illustrated every high-fidelity asset used in the interactive.
Development and User Testing:
I worked with the dev team to brainstorm, build prototypes, test the game mechanics, make tweaks to the gameplay, and provide visual QA up until installation.
